Floor Cleaning Tips for Vinyl, Hardwood and Tile 1891

Tile, hardwood and vinyl floors are fairly clean and low-maintenance compared to carpet, collecting less dust and not requiring the constant vacuuming demanded by thick shag. Still, a little bit of cleaning will always be required to keep your floors looking their best. Here’s our floor cleaning tips to all you to do it quickly and easily:

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tile floors are among the easiest surfaces in your home to clean, requiring little other than warm water. Be sure to sweep or vacuum first to get rid of loose dirt. Micro-fiber mops work better than sponge mops for tile floors, because sponge mops can push dirt down into the grout tracks, making the floor more difficult to clean.  Dirty grout can be taken care of with a brush. If you prefer to clean tile floors the old-fashioned way—on your hands and knees with a rag—just be sure to wipe the floor using a circular motion.

Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl can be cleaned in much the same manner as tile, though you can mix borax in with your hot water for extra cleaning power.

Hardwood Floors

One of the best ways to clean hardwood floors is to bring water to a boil, then add two teabags and let them steep. Pour the tea into a bucket and let it cool to a point where it can be handled. Then, wring out a cloth in the tea and use it to clean the floor. The cloth should be damp, but not soaked. The tannic acid in the tea will bring out the wood’s natural shine.

Filling in Scratches

Hardwood floors get scratched over time, and cleaning can unfortunately make these blemished more visible. To minimize scratch marks, find a crayon that matches your floor’s color. Rub the crayon into the scratch, heat the area with a blow-dryer on a high setting, and then buff the floor with a soft cloth.
